Industry demand has driven continued expansion of the Barton Community College Commercial Driver’s License Program. Barton is now an official test site and a second truck has been acquired from Doonan’s Peterbilt with bodywork and paint from Jeremy’s Paint and Body Shop in Sterling.

Another summer is essentially over with Labor Day just around the corner. A sure sign summer is over is the start of another school year. Barton Community College starts this Wednesday with another crop of incoming freshman in the agriculture program. But let’s take a step back and examine what education it takes to succeed in today’s agricultural environment as a farmer and/or rancher.

Barton Community College has announced its latest educational opportunity, the Mental Health Technician Certificate program through a partnership with Larned State Hospital (LSH) with support from the Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services (KDADS).

Barton Theatre will hold open auditions for its fall production “Our Town” from 4-8 p.m. Aug. 22 and 23 in the Fine Arts Auditorium. Those wanting to audition can show up anytime during the allotted hours on either night. The Theatre Department will be casting all roles and all technical positions. According to weather reports, the 100 degree heat is supposed to break starting today with temperatures a more normal ninety or so degrees with chances for rain. We cope with heat through air-conditioning, drinking plenty of fluids, dressing appropriately, finding shade, and sweating. But have you ever wondered how crop plants cope with excessive temperatures or why plants wilt? They can’t hide or sweat but within limits they have very effective coping mechanisms.
