Certification, registration, and licensure requirements for pharmacy technicians differ across states. Some states may have additional requirements not covered in Barton’s program. Before enrolling, students should contact the Board of Pharmacy in the state where they plan to work to confirm eligibility. What Do Pharmacy Technicians Do?

Pharmacy technicians support licensed pharmacists by performing both clinical and administrative tasks, including:

  • Preparing Medications – Counting tablets, labeling prescriptions, and assisting with IVs and drug compounding
  • Managing Operations – Answering phones, restocking inventory, processing orders, and handling insurance billing
  • Working Across Settings – Employed in retail and mail-order pharmacies, hospitals, nursing homes, assisted-living facilities, grocery stores, and large retailers
  • Interacting with Others – Collaborating with patients, healthcare professionals, and team members—strong communication and customer service skills are essential

Pharmacy Technician – Occupational Outlook

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of pharmacy technicians is projected to grow 6% from 2022 to 2032, which is faster than the average for all occupations. About 44,900 openings for pharmacy technicians are projected each year, on average, over the decade.

Growth in the demand for prescription medications will lead to increased demand for pharmacy services, and pharmacy technicians will be needed to assist pharmacists in serving customers more efficiently.
