Medical Laboratory Technology, Medical Laboratory Assistant and Phlebotomy blend the best of medicine and science, offering a dynamic and meaningful career path. Medical lab technicians play a critical role in healthcare by performing a variety of laboratory tests—everything from examining blood samples under a microscope to identifying bacteria and conducting chemical analyses—all essential in diagnosing and treating disease.
Barton’s Medical Laboratory Technology program is delivered online, providing maximum flexibility for students balancing work, family, and other responsibilities. Our dedicated advisors work with each student to create a personalized course of study that aligns with their schedule and career goals.
Hands-on experience is a key part of this program. Students may complete cooperative lab hours either on Barton’s campus or at an approved clinical site in their local area. Barton also offers the ability to transfer general education courses from other accredited colleges or dual credit programs within high schools.

State Licensure Disclosure – Medical Laboratory Technician Program
Regulations for certification, registration, and licensure of Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLTs) vary by state. Some states have additional requirements beyond those offered in Barton’s MLT program.
Currently, the following states have licensure requirements that may differ from those in Kansas:
California, Hawaii, Florida, New York, North Dakota, Tennessee, Louisiana, Nevada, West Virginia, Montana, and Georgia. Puerto Rico also requires licensure.
Important Note:
This program is not approved for students residing in California or New York.
Prospective students planning to work outside of Kansas should contact the appropriate state licensing board to verify specific requirements prior to enrollment. For more information on state licensure, visit the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS).
The coursework in general education, life sciences, and specific medical laboratory sciences is supplemented by actual clinical experience in a medical laboratory. Upon completion of the MLT Program you will receive an Associate in Applied Science degree and will be eligible to take national certification examinations. This is a recommended degree for students who intend to use it as a bridge to other medical careers or pathways.

According to Bureau of Labor Statistics figures, the number of medical laboratory technicians in the U.S. is expected to increase by 5 percent from 2023 to 2033. In contrast, the number of jobs in all other industries is expected to increase by only 4 percent during the same time frame. While many lab techs work in hospitals, doctor’s offices, and other medical facilities, job opportunities are also available in other industries. Possibilities include medical research laboratories, blood banks, universities, and manufacturers of pharmaceutical and medicinal products.
