RSVP Medical Transportation
Volunteers provide transportation to Barton County residents needing help getting to necessary medical appointments. Volunteers drive their own vehicle and RSVP reimburses 27 cents per mile. RSVP also has a van available to help transport passengers that require a wheelchair. Volunteers can choose long distance or area trips with the option to drive the van when necessary. Volunteers have full discretion to accept a trip or not. All volunteers are screened with a background and Motor Vehicle Records check. Call Victoria for more information at (620) 792-1614 or fill out the Medical Transportation Drives sign up form.
Meals On Wheels
The Meals On Wheels program delivers hot meals, Monday through Friday, during the noon hour to homebound seniors. This is not only a nutritious meal, but a wellness check. Volunteers have the opportunity to be that one person a recipient may see that day, a make sure all is well. Volunteers deliver no more than ten meals and it takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour depending upon the route. Available opportunities can be on-going or as a substitute. Location for meal pickup is at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Avenue in Great Bend or at the Friendship House is Hoisington. Call Susan at (620) 792-1833 or fill out the Meals On Wheels Open Shifts sign up form.
Medicare Counselors
The purpose of the counseling is to help seniors wade through the maze of Medicare and to help them better understand their choices so they can make informed decisions. This is a totally free service offered to anyone in the area. Volunteers go through the Southwest Kansas Area Agency on Aging training for Medicare Counseling (one day training and several on-line computer hours of homework.) Volunteers donate their time to help clients mainly during the Open Enrollment period for the Part “D” prescription plan. Training for the position takes place in late spring. Linn is the coordinator for this program and she can be reached at (620) 617-3640 or email her at HoggL@bartonccc.edu
Grocery Shopper
The purpose of this program is to help homebound seniors maintain a good nutritional diet by helping them obtain groceries from the store even though they are not able to do so themselves. Grocery Shoppers check in with the RSVP office on a weekly basis to see if there are shopping trips to be done. Shoppers will pick up the lists and the RSVP payment and shop for client. Groceries and receipt are dropped at the client’s home and payment picked up and delivered back to RSVP office. Volunteers are background checked. Please call Linn at (620) 792-1614 for more information about this opportunity or email her at HoggL@bartonccc.edu.
