Highlighted Sessions
Math Bowl
As part of Jack Kilby STEM Day, Baton Community College will host a Math Bowl, a team-based mathematics competition for high school students who enjoy problem solving, mathematical challenges, and friendly competition.
COMPETITION FORMAT
- Teams will compete in a double-elimination tournament, with each round featuring two teams answering mathematics questions read by a moderator.
- Questions will cover a variety of mathematical topics through Algebra II and challenge students to apply mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
- Registration is limited to 24 teams, with up to (4) students per team, and spots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Students may bring their own TI-83 or TI-84 series graphing calculator. A limited number of TI-83 graphing calculators will also be available for student use.
AWARDS
At the conclusion of the tournament, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams will be formally recognized with certificates.
In addition:
- Winning Team: Each team member will receive a TI-84 series graphing calculator or an equivalent graphing calculator.
- Second-place team: Each team member will receive a TI-30 series scientific calculator or an equivalent scientific calculator.

In this session, participants will learn to use light to take better photos. Learn to make portraits eye-catching, flattering, and / or dramatic.
In this hands-on session, students will apply creative problem-solving strategies to design and build clay structures engineered to resist the pull of gravity. Through testing and iteration, they will explore innovation, resilience, problem-solving and they physics of stability.
In this session, participants will learn about the practical work experience that combines the technical and scientific elements of a S.T.E.M. career with a variety of job opportunities through the National Guard.
In this session, participants will use clues to find each Avenger's graph and linear equation to solve locks to open a breakout box and collect a reward.
In the session, participants will see the human body as never before using dissection Anatomage table with six full body sized cadavers. You can try your hand at performing kinesiology functions, digital pregnancy - human embryonic development by interacting with 31 week fetus inside the mother's body and observing delivery of the baby, an angioplasty as you guide a wire and balloon through the arteries into the heart or remove structures one at a time and watch the breathing heart while performing ECG. We will use the Anatomage Tablet, the world's only fully segmented real human 3D anatomy portable device.
In this session, participants will learn how pneumatic force created by releasing a weighted drop rod to launch student-built straw rockets works. Students control launch energy by varying the release height, and adjust the trajectory angle using the built-in gauge. With a clear tube that displays internal parts, the launcher makes the science visible. Students will be introduced to rocketry, physics, and the engineering design process.
In this session, participants will explore the basics of human movement and injury prevention.
In this hands-on biology workshop, participants will explore the external and internal anatomy of a bullfrog through a guided dissection. Using real specimens, participants will investigate major organ systems and examine how structure supports function in vertebrate animals. The bullfrog will provide insights into comparative biology, as bullfrogs share many anatomical features with other vertebrates, including humans.
Participants will also meet the live Kansas Wetlands Education Center amphibian ambassadors.
In this session, participants will be introduced to the variation and importance of insects in agriculture and everyday life. It will highlight insect biology and explain the differences between beneficial insects, such as pollinators and natural predators, and harmful pests that threaten crops. The focus will be on aphids and an example of an insect pest and sorghum or corn as their host crops to demonstrate pest management strategies and plant - insect interactions. Through a hands-on exercise, participants will explore insect interactions and test an ecological hypothesis related to plant resistance and biological control by natural enemies. in this activity, you will also learn how plants release chemical signals (volatiles) that attract natural enemies to help reduce aphid populations.
In this session, participants will explore the world of weather including what causes storms, identifying clouds and storm features, and the role of a meteorologist.
In this session, participants will learn that STEM is about using science, technology, engineering, and math to figure out how things work and create new solutions. At Fort Hays State, Applied Technology makes STEM hands-on by allowing you to design, build, and problem-solve in construction, engineering design, and manufacturing - skills that lead directly into exciting careers.
In this session, participants will learn how we can engineer materials and systems to change bubble and droplets formation. The change in droplet and bubble dynamics can have profound impact on power plant efficiency, the performance of refrigeration systems, and aviation safety.
In this session, participants will experience a 'tasty' aspect of food science by participating in a sensory panel. Participants will learn the science behind flavors and smells as well as how to evaluate various characteristics of food, beverages, flavors and fragrances. In this session, participants will learn how to build a radiation detector, conduct a half-life experiment, and see demonstrations of detectors, nuclear safety and computer modeling.
In this session, participants will learn how to create stories and simple programs in an object-oriented programming environment using the Alice programming language. Participants will also watch a short video about Jack Kilby's most famous invention.
In this hands-on session, participants will learn how to work with unknown materials and take steps to classify them according to their hazards.
In this session, participants will learn how to visualize molecules and simulate their movement using computer simulation and physics. Participants will interact with molecules through computer simulations. Participants will also observe the molecules that make up our everyday lives, like proteins, and understand how they work. Participants will learn how medicines work and how they are designed.
In this session, participants will be able to observe live specimens and experience a small petting zoo while learning.
In this session, participants will learn that chemistry is an exciting area of science that is full of wonder. Come and see what makes chemistry cool and fun.
In this session, participants will discover different careers with aviation and how they can unlock opportunities you didn't know existed before.
