Fierce Planets
A SAQA and Johns Hopkins Wavelengths Exhibition
June 12 – August 15
Reception: June 12, 4:00–6:00 PM
From space, Earth looks like a shimmering gem suspended in an inky, infinite expanse. But this serene image masks the magnificent and volatile interior forces that make life possible on its surface. The placid appearances of our neighboring planets similarly belie their powers and science fiction-worthy features.
A diverse group of 42 artists from 11 countries present their views of the universe in this fascinating collection of contemporary quilt and textile art.
Fierce Planets is a collaboration between Studio Art Quilts Associates and the Johns Hopkins Wavelengths™ research communication program. Artists drew inspiration from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg Distinguished Professor Dr. Sabine Stanley’s work in planetary science and her book, What’s Hidden Inside Planets?

Go Figure
A Study of Humanity in Portrait and Form
Curated from the Barton Foundation Permanent Art Collection, this exhibition explores the human body in portrait and figure, including works with artistic nudity.
Exhibit Runs January 16 - February 21
Reception: January 16, 4-6 pm
Shafer Art Gallery is excited to present Go Figure, a new exhibition curated by Lindsey Bogner, Executive Director of Institutional Advancement and Foundation Director at Barton Community College. This thoughtful show highlights figurative works drawn entirely from our permanent collection, bringing together portraits, scenes of cowboys, sculpture, prints, a historic temple rubbing, and more.
Several pieces in the exhibition have never before been on public view, including a selection of nude studies that have remained in our collection room for decades. Go Figure invites visitors to explore the human form in its many expressions, offering a rare glimpse into artworks that help shape the depth and history of our collection.
Shafer Art Gallery Hours: Monday-Saturday, 10 am - 5 pm. (Our gallery follows Barton academic holiday closures.)
