Story by Joe Vinduska

The Barton Community College Theatre Department will host open auditions for its spring musical production “Godspell,” by Stephen Schwartz from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 2 and 3 in the Fine Arts Auditorium.

Those auditioning need to prepare one song from musical theatre and bring sheet music.  An accompanist will be provided.

Barton Theatre Instructor Erin Renard will direct the play and anyone aged 17-40 is encouraged to audition.

According to the Barton Theatre website, “Godspell” is based on the Gospel According to St. Matthew.  A small group of people help Jesus Christ tell different parables by using a wide variety of games, storytelling techniques and a hefty dose of comic timing. An eclectic blend of songs ranging in style from pop to vaudeville is employed as the story of Jesus' life dances across the stage. Dissolving hauntingly into the Last Supper and the Crucifixion, Jesus' messages of kindness, tolerance and love come vibrantly to life.

There will be multiple performances at the following times:

  • February 27-28 at 7:30 p.m.
  • March 1 at 2 p.m.
  • March 6 and 7 at 7:30 p.m.
  • March 8 at 2 p.m.
